What is a reiki attunement?

Reiki attunements are a sacred initiation performed by a Reiki Master to align a student’s energy field with the Usui Reiki system. This energetic cleansing of the chakras allows a student to channel universal life force energy.

Specific Reiki symbols, their mantras, and hand positions are used in the initiation. The symbols, mantras, and chakras performed in the attunements vary for each level of Reiki.

Reiki Level 1 - Self-Healing: Opening the body to the energy for self-treatment and lifelong access to connect to Reiki at any time.

Reiki Level 2 - Practitioner: Energy flow is increased and transfer of sacred symbols and mantras for emotional and distance healing.

Reiki Level 3 - Master: The handover of the Master symbol. The ability to now initiate students.

Reiki Level 4 - Teacher: The Reiki Master is now empowered to perform attunements and teach Reiki to others.

Level 3 and 4 attunements are generally performed together.

How Is A Reiki Attunement Performed?

Attunements can be performed in person, live online (via Zoom, for example), or remotely (at a distance, but not live online).

Reiki is quantum level energy that exists across space and time and is received the same no matter how far apart the student and Reiki Master are in the world.

A Reiki Master first cleanses, grounds and centres their energy. Next, they attune to Reiki energy through sacred symbols and mantras to prepare for performing the attunement. The student, with feet placed firmly on the ground, closes their eyes, and focuses on mindful breathing while receiving the attunements. The initiation takes 20-30 minutes.

Usui Reiki Level 1 students, for example, receive 4 attunements to serve the physical level;

1. The heart chakra - opening of the heart to the energy, affects the thymus and adrenal glands, the physical and etheric body

2. The throat chakra - opening of the throat to the energy, adapts the nervous system to the energy, affects the thyroid and serves to a great extent for the development of higher consciousness

3. The third eye chakra - opening of the inner eye to the energy, affects the pituitary gland and the higher consciousness

4. The crown chakra - affects the pineal gland, creates an opening upwards, the energy is sealed for Reiki energy to be accessed for life.

After receiving Reiki attunements, students begin 21 consecutive days of self-Reiki (approx. 30 minutes each day) to continue to cleanse through the chakras and strengthen channelling. Daily self-practice after 21 days further cleanses, strengthens, and enhances one’s life force energy and becomes deeply transformative.

What Does A Reiki Attunement Feel Like?

The most common sensations are feeling a change in temperature, such as warmth or coolness (goosebumps), tingling sensations in the palms of the hands and center of the soles of the feet, or seeing colours (chakra colours). Some experience bliss or joyful energy, deep relaxation, and others may feel nothing at all during the attunement.

Each experience will depend on your unique energy field, your sensitivity to energy, and will evolve over time with continued daily self-practice.

After Effects of Reiki Attunements

Energetic cleansing of the chakras is a form of purification on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. Some students may experience a temporary flare-up of old physical or emotional symptoms after an attunement while their energy field recalibrates. These are generally temporary reactions lasting a day or so, similar to how the body detoxes after shifts in energy via exercise, massage therapy, physio, chiropractic or acupuncture treatments, for example.
